What do you like best about Peak?

The students discover that learning is a process- one that requires editing, revision, and mirrors more the “real world” and what they will do in their professional lives. They also learn to make connections between their community, their town, their world and their school, and recognize that they have a responsibility to participate and support all of the above. It implies a more active awareness, with a visual that the kids are an important part of all of that, as opposed to an individual.

My kid is happy and loves school!

–Division I Parent

I feel very informed. I feel valued as a parent, simply in my parental role and additionally when asked for my opinion and input. I have also felt support as a parent from the staff working most closely to my girls.

—Division III Parent

It’s not test- driven and looks at the “whole” student. There is more engaged learning, learning by doing and small classes.

Being a Montessorian, I have been an advocate of progressive education for over 20 years. I think that the students at Peak have more of a voice in creating their own education and being responsible members of the Peak community and our society.

–Division I Parent

It’s more active learning and inquiry, as well as more self-directed. I think it’s a bit more free-form. The atmosphere is so supportive; it fosters a responsibility in the students for their own learning and behavior.

–Division I Parent

I love that my student likes going to school. I like the small community and friendly environment, the teachers, and that my student is in a safe place.

The Peak School is smaller and the classes are smaller. The traditional way is more about testing and memorization. At Peak, the DMO’s are met when the student masters or completely understands the concept at hand. They are able to revise work until it is mastered. Peak students move forward once they have mastered the work.

I would point to the 10 principles and note specifically the ability to individualize the education, depth or breadth, and teacher as coach, and the role of mastery. In comparison, traditional education is more top down, more memorization, more one size fits all.

–Division III Parent

The Peak School focuses on students’ taking charge of their own education. There are no grades, but students earn mastery objectives. The focus is on learning how to learn vs memorizing content. The class size is about 12-16 students vs about 30-35 students in a traditional school. Student democracy is important at Peak.

Such a close and caring community! I feel someone is looking out for my child all the time. All the outdoor activities really keep him positive about school.
